The Bakery Stools

This project explores the opportunity to work with Big River bakery, a community driven social enterprise in Newcastle. The aim was to consider how a collection of seating could reflect the bakery, with the principles of emotional design being a useful guideline for the designs throughout. The Bakeries desire to gain connections with the community through initiatives such as baking classes for children, also inspired the project. The stottie, a bread that is a symbol of the Northeast originating in working class communities, informed my design. The result was two well-crafted stackable stools reflecting the bakery in different ways. The first, an investigation into hardwood processes and the other investigating metal processes made from mild steel.

The metal stool was inspired by the stottie and how it is a symbol of the community

The metal stools were both inspired by the stottie and aimed at suiting the environment of the bakery, therefore the colours of the existing seating inspired the choice of powder coat
