Big River Bakery
Big River Bakery is a local community driven Bakery in Shieldfield, they have a passion for community and the stottie bread! Founded and ran by Andy Haddon they believe that ‘a business should also be part of the community it serves and strive to make a difference’ (social impact report, 2023). They do this through free baking classes, donating food to local schools and employing those with neurodivergence, but they have a vision to do so much more. The bakery stools are a nod to the amazing works and ethos of this bakery.
The bakery informed two of my projects. Firstly, the stottie stands and then the bakery stools.
For the two projects I got to work with the bakery in different ways. In the stottie stand project I had the opportunity to interview Andy on camera asking him to discuss the meaning of the stottie to the bakery and to Newcastle. When designing the bakery stools, I got to have regular visits to the bakery, discussing my ideas. I also got to take photos around the bakery to look at how and learn how the bakery runs day to day and consider how this could inspire my work.
